Kahawai are excellent salt water sporting fish, readily taking most baitfish flies and invariably putting up a good fight. Large schools of Kahawai are often seen, usually indicated by screaming, dipping, and diving flocks of terns and gulls. At estuary mouths is also a good time to target Kahwai on an incoming tide. Fly fishers sometimes use their trout 5-6 wgt rods to land them, but it is advisable to use 8-9 wgt fly rods. Smaller sized baitfish flies with large eyes work always seem to get results.
